Quiet Dignity and Grace

March 06, 2007

Do you remember the exact moment you turned thirty? Like, the exact instant? Where you were? Who was with you? The precise thing that you were doing when the clock struck twelve, and your twenties were forever gone?

clay and 24 birthday 2007 279.jpg

Me, either. But according to the above evidence, I seem to be bringing it on home.

And that is pretty much all I have to say about that. I am thirty! But I bet I am not mature yet.

Thank y'all for hanging out for another year! I appreciate all your comments, your emails, your support, and your general kick-ass-ness. You are all invited for cocktails, kisses, and spectacular Cher impersonations. Just don't mention false teeth or replacement hips, and make sure someone brings me some Tylenol.

Yay! Happy 30! From someone who did this in November...

Posted by: hannita | March 6, 2007 05:09 PM

Yeah Right! You can't fool me. If you are a day over 27 I certainly don't see the evidence of it. Anyhoo, Happy Birthday and party on!

Posted by: mackmomma | March 6, 2007 05:13 PM

Happy Birthday, Miss Doxie! Thanks for your many years of hilarity and wine.
Also, if I look half that good at thirty, it's because I sold my soul to someone devious.

Posted by: -m | March 6, 2007 05:18 PM

Happy Birthday! Next year you should pull out all the stops and do Celine Dion impressions.

Posted by: Cheryl | March 6, 2007 05:22 PM

H*A*P*P*Y B*I*R*T*H*D*A*Y!!

Take it from someone older and, perhaps, wiser. It's only just begun!

Posted by: Linda | March 6, 2007 05:24 PM

YAY FOR THIRTY!!! Mine is on June 30, and I can only hope I can wear boots like that and not shatter every bone in my body. Happppppeeeeeeeee Biiiiiiirrrtthhhhdaaaaaaaaaay, LEIGH!

Posted by: missbanshee | March 6, 2007 05:26 PM

See?!? 30 is fun, and not at all scary like people would have you believe,

Posted by: jive turkey | March 6, 2007 05:29 PM

Welcome to the dark side, Leigh! I hear 30 is the new 20. I wouldn't know, because I am busy buying shoes. (I never would've done that in my 20s!) (Speaking of which: Cher or not, those boots are FABULOUS.)

Posted by: Mir | March 6, 2007 05:35 PM

I have not turned 30 yet, but am looking forward to it much, much more if it's anything like your picture!!! Woohoo for white wine, pointy-toed black boots, and tricky dance moves (that is what you're doing, right?!?!?)!

Posted by: Hillary | March 6, 2007 05:38 PM

Happy Birthday! I Hope Bo didn't leave you any presents that were of the brown, smelly type.

As for my 30th birthday, I have no idea what I was doing as it was 6 ( almost 7) years ago. I'm finding that memory loss isn't such a bad thing. Sometimes it even works out in my favor. LOL

Posted by: Stacy | March 6, 2007 05:39 PM

OK, though upon further inspection, am now wondering what the box of ready-lite logs in the background had to do with said 30th birthday?

Posted by: Hillary | March 6, 2007 05:39 PM

Welcome to your Dirty Thirties!

I would say that I rememeber mine like it wasn't 2 years ago-bites lip. It was nice, not the funnest time around, but nice. Dignified, yea, that's the word.

Dirty it up Girl!

ps. Still need more Gimmme!

Posted by: Mrs.Mga | March 6, 2007 05:42 PM

Happy birthday and welcome to the club. I have nothing nice to say about thirty so I'll be a good girl and not say anything at all!

Posted by: Amanda | March 6, 2007 05:47 PM

Happy Birthday! Mine is March 12th...I am glad to share the month with you! I hope you celebrated as much as you deserve (which it looks like you did, Cher and all)...

Posted by: Sarah B. | March 6, 2007 05:52 PM

Unlurking just this once to say - HAPPY BIRTHDAY, LEIGH!

Oh and also? I heart Cher. Kinda with a burning, searing passion. :D

Posted by: Lisa | March 6, 2007 05:55 PM

Happy Birthday!

You don't look a day over 23. Seriously.

Posted by: Laurie | March 6, 2007 05:56 PM

Happiest of Birthdays to you!
I just turned 30 at the end of January, and so far, so good.
I may have been dreading it for nothing, as it turns out.
Many happy returns!

Happy Birthday to You!

I also am turning 30 this year, and I can't decide if it's a big bummer or pretty damn awesome.

Hope your birthday was pretty damn awesome!

Posted by: gabby | March 6, 2007 06:03 PM

Damn thing! That MWAH was followed by much more. Ah well, it basically boiled down to this 42 year old broad wishing you a very happy birthday.

Posted by: Julie | March 6, 2007 06:05 PM

Happy birthday from a new reader! Looks like you had a hell of a good time!

Posted by: Sheila | March 6, 2007 06:14 PM

No, I have NO IDEA what I was doing when I turned thirty. Ancient history baby.

Happy, Happy Birthday Miss D !!!

(Mir is right, those boots are killer!)

Posted by: Procrastamom | March 6, 2007 06:59 PM

Happy 30th
I remember 30... I think was like, 7 years ago? See, first it's all "thirtieth birthday parties" then it's nothing but memory loss and blindness. ;)

Posted by: tesco | March 6, 2007 07:01 PM

Happy Birthday to you! You look amazing for 30. So amazing, I've gone and got a girl crush on you. ;-)

Posted by: Mrs. Bojangles | March 6, 2007 07:04 PM

Woo-hooo! Welcome to the thirties, Leigh - so far they can't be beat.

Posted by: Melissa | March 6, 2007 07:11 PM

Prettiest 30 year old ever. Happy Birthday!

This is coming from a 32 year old ;)

Posted by: Leslie | March 6, 2007 07:17 PM

I just turned 30 (Feb 24), and I didn't get to have as much wine as you apparently did. Stupid surgery. BUT! I did buy myself four pairs of shoes. I started with three pairs, but had to return one, and then accidentally got two pairs to replace the one pair. You know how it is. So far 30 is a much better shoe year than 29 was, so I'm rocking my 30s. I hope you rock yours just as much.

Posted by: amy | March 6, 2007 07:33 PM

really, if you have wine and cool shoes, does it matter what the age? you're rockin' any way. Happy Birthday online person I've never met but would glad share a glass or twelve with if we were in the same drinking hole.

Posted by: ericka | March 6, 2007 07:52 PM

Happy 30th, Miss Doxie!

Tomorrow, I turn 21 and officially am allowed to drink in the USA. Unfortunately, I writing papers, in my room, up in the Great White North. But there will be wine, I am telling myself in consolation. Wine makes political theory paper-writing more interesting.

I hope I am as sparkly and wrinkle-free as you nine years from now. *clinks glass*

Posted by: Fairly Odd Mother | March 6, 2007 08:55 PM

Your dentures look great in that picture, but I hope you're putting the real cash towards one of those step-in tubs for elderly people that Ed McMahon is pushing at us during every commercial break. You're going to need one soon!

Happy Birthday!

Happy birthday, Leigh! Hope this is a fabulous year for you!

Posted by: Jen Z. | March 6, 2007 09:19 PM

But really -- you were falling in this picture? And you cracked your tailbone, right?

Posted by: wwcutie | March 6, 2007 09:31 PM

I just turned 30 too! It's not so bad. But you look like you had waaaay more fun than I did.

Happy Birthday!

Posted by: jay | March 6, 2007 10:19 PM

Hey Leigh,

Welcome to your 31st year of life (you've completed 30 years, so you're now in number 31). Is that depressing?

It isn't really THAT depressing... not if you think of it in terms that you're now in your 4th decade of life.

Posted by: The Mac | March 6, 2007 10:22 PM

Happy Birthday, Miss Doxie!

Being the sensible type I am, on MY 30th I drank myself blotto and so have no memory of that particular day of infamy. Well, now I'm less than two years from my 50th, and I doubt if I can consume a sufficiant quantity of alcoholic joy to make myself forget THAT!
Happy Birthday, my dear Miss D.

PS: March 6th was my beloved doxie angel Beatrice's birthday as well. I hope you don't think I'm weird for mentioning that......

Posted by: Sharon | March 7, 2007 01:42 AM

Happy birthday! Hope it was a great one. :)

Posted by: Radiantsky | March 7, 2007 02:24 AM

Happy Birthday Leigh! I'm (almost) halfway through my 30s and so far, they've been pretty damn cool. Although I do find myself muttering savagely about "youngsters these days" ... so maybe I'm just an old cow at heart.

But you are funny and smart and pretty and not old-cowish at all. And wearing funky boots while drinking and dancing to Cher. Ah, that's what it's all about!

Posted by: ysabelkid | March 7, 2007 04:04 AM

Happy Birthday Leigh from a fellow lawyer type who is shortly to turn (gulp!) 40!!!!!!!! (Haven't grown up yet tho')

Posted by: LyndaL | March 7, 2007 05:20 AM

I'll bring ibuprofen instead of Tylenol; you'll need your liver a bit longer so as to enjoy even more WINE when you hit 40. Trust me, this I know [the 40 part].

Posted by: CLD | March 7, 2007 09:00 AM

Happy birthday, Leigh! If it's any consolation, you don't look a day over 29.

Eh, who am I kidding...you don't look a day over 23.

Can't wait to hear all about the big celebration!

Posted by: TRACE | March 7, 2007 09:32 AM

Your entry made me so nostalgic for my thirties - I loved them. It was such a fun decade for me. Happy birthday Miss Doxie! As someone who has left her 30s behind fairly recently, I wish you as much fun as I had (and that was a whole helluva lot).

Can't wait to hear about the party and have a great year!

Posted by: Diane | March 7, 2007 09:42 AM

Happy Birthday Miss Doxie!
I was in San Antonio at Howl At The Moon

Now that you are 30, remember to move slowly when you get up from a chair. Your heart can probably no longer handle standing up quickly.

Take Care!

Posted by: Brad | March 7, 2007 11:16 AM

So, were you singing, "If I Could Turn Back Time"?

You are far cooler than Cher. And you don't look a day over 21. Happy, Happy Birthday! Give the dogs lots of kisses from the Internets.

Posted by: Leesavee | March 7, 2007 11:19 AM

I do recall 30. And I'm pretty sure I was in the exact same position. With wine in hand and a box of faux logs behind me -- no lie. We might be the same person, although your hair is much, much prettier.

Happy best decade so far.

Posted by: kris | March 7, 2007 11:23 AM

From a 64 year old fan to a young sprout I admire - MANY HAPPY RETURNS. Growing up is overrated anyway!

Posted by: Wendy | March 7, 2007 12:09 PM

O my gosh, just delurking to say, you are so stinkin' cute! Happy Birthday, young'un! And don't worry. The 30's are great. Just keep drinking wine, and you might believe that. ;-)

Posted by: dcrmom | March 7, 2007 12:18 PM

Wheeeeee! Happy Birthday!

Sheryl Crow said that "40 is the new 30," so I suppose it stands to reason that 30 is the new 20. Which means you can't legally drink for another year. Put down the wine!

(If it helps your misgivings, I enjoyed my thirties *way* more than my twenties.)

Posted by: Cobwebs | March 7, 2007 01:25 PM

Happy Birthday!!! Thanks for the constant source of amusement.

Posted by: Faith | March 7, 2007 01:37 PM

Happy 30th! I proclaim this the Doxie Decade! I'm well past 40 and I haven't slowed down (although I don't do Cher as well as you do).

Best. Picture. Ever.

Posted by: culotte | March 7, 2007 01:44 PM

Happy Birthday!!!

I turn thirty this year, too. I don't think you qualify as "mature" if you try to justify having a bowl of Extreme Crazy Butter Popcorn for dinner by saying, "It's a grain, right? And this 'butter' may at one time have had a dairy component. And this wine is a fruit!" So I hear you, sister. Rock on!

Posted by: JennyM | March 7, 2007 01:44 PM

I'm 51 and it just keeps getting better. Nah, not really. But may I say that you look mahvelous (you're probably too young to remember that bit) and Jimmy and Buster send puppy kisses.

Could we have a sound file of your Cher impersonation? Not to seem creepy or anything, but I'd love to hear that sometime!

Posted by: sharon | March 7, 2007 02:06 PM

cher is better than celine dion.

happy birthday!!

Posted by: jennifer | March 7, 2007 02:10 PM

Congrats and wine!

There, my two year old just sang you Happy Birthday. :-)

And seriously? 30 is not old. My husband just turned *cough* 36 and I swear he doesn't look a day over 30.

Posted by: Peyton | March 7, 2007 02:38 PM

My hubby threw me an awesome surprise party for my 30th birthday, with a DJ and a full bar, woo-hoo! I'll never forget that. Since then, my 30's have been one big party! (Not really) but I hope yours are.

Once my birthday, I think it was the 7th or 8th anniversary of my 29th birthday fell on the day before daylight savings. It is October 27th and we were supposed to fall back on the 28th. And yea, yea, yea......you are supposed to fall back at 2:00 am, but I wasn't having that shit. It was my birthday on the 27th and when the clock struck midnight, I rolled that clock back a full hour and continued my birthday par-tay! I had a 25 hour birthday! Woop!

Posted by: Belle | March 8, 2007 09:47 AM

Happy Birthday Miss D!

As I recall, I was on a middle seat of a flight from Phoenix to New York, coming back from a conference. I think one of my co-workers (comfortably seated in first class) sent me back a drink. I think it was a Heinekin in a plastic cup.

Glad yours was better!

Happy Belated Birthday, Miss Doxie! When I turned 30 I was in Mexico City with my mom and her best friend. I told them I wanted margaritas and mariachi bands from daylight 'til dark and they obliged. The 30's have been the best for me, so far, and I hope they are for you to!

Hi, Miss Doxie -

First, Happy 30th! It was a great day for me. Yep, I totally remember exactly where I was at the big moment. Trust me, it ony gets better.

Second, has anyone ever told you that you look like the actress that plays Amber Moore on the Young & the Restless? You do!

Third, please update us with a report on the presents that the Boy & the puppers got you. :)

Birthday hugs,

I *need* to know - were you singing "If I could turn back time?" ;)

Posted by: Lani | March 8, 2007 09:21 PM

Well crap. I'm late. Happy belated birthday, Miss Doxie.

Do you have to be so pretty in EVERY single photo you take? Sigh.

Don't worry about the big 3-0. In about six months, you'll realize that you are still very, very young. You don't start freaking out till you get to my age...37 and realize, "Oh my GOD!!!!! Fourty is looming on the horizon....40! Me? 40? I still act like I'm 21, 25 on good days..."

Thirty just means you have now entered the most interesting and best part of your journey.

(Don't you love it when us older people try to impart such wisdom on you youngin's?)

Posted by: Serenity | March 9, 2007 07:34 AM

HAPPY HAPPY BIRTHDAY!! You look fabulous, daaaaaahling! As for the 30's, they are so awesome. I wouldn't go back. And you know, they say that 40 is the new 30, so according to that logic, you just turned 20. Mmmmmm hmmmmmmmm....

Posted by: ubergirlelijah | March 9, 2007 11:39 AM

I totally agree with Ubergirlelijah, you're really only 20 and a half years old.

Happy Birthday, Cher ... ooopppsss sorry ...Miss D

Happy belated birthday! Don't worry; as I told AB, your thirties are your absolute prime. Furthermore, you DO NOT HAVE TO GROW UP NOW. Ask my husband, who is 52 and still not a grownup.

Oh, I LOVE my thrities! Love them! My twenties were full of career angst, a bad relationship, not enough money, blah... Thirties are all about a stable, lucrative career, a soul-mate, the child I'd always dreamed about, the house I've always wanted, and a long-awaited sense of security. Somewhere around 29 and a half, the world turned around and life got good. Every woman I know tells me it really, honestly, only gets better from here. So, Happy (Belated) Birthday to You!

So you turned thirty and then you forgot how to post ever again? That is sad stuff. Not happy, like a birthday.

Here is something: http://flickr.com/photos/opiumpoppy1985/

The stuffed adorables reminded me of you and your store. I don't know why, since they're nothing alike, but they are all filed under A for Awesome. Also, that's a dude's set of pictures. Irrelevant! Sustained.

The senility has clearly set in and Miss Doxie cannot fathom the new-fangled technology needed to POST IN HER JOURNAL. Sad!

OMG I LOVE THOSE BOOTS!!! That's the first thing my eyes gravitated to. I've been on a quest to find pointy, sexy boots for my jeans and you're wearing them! Where oh where, did you get them? Must. Have. Boots.

Oh, Happy Birthday, by the way.

Miss Doxie, where are you? We miss you deeply. Hope you and Dukay and the doggies are all fine and you have time to write again soon!

Wait, when you turn 30 you forget how to use the internet?!??! Where ARE YOU, GIRL??? Don't tell me that you were set on fire in a Viking Funeral or Bo ate you or something...WE NEED DOXIE!

PS: I swear to god, I had a dream last week wherein you changed your site to one of those neon blinking MySpace nightmare pages. Please comfort me with an update. I beg you. (Yes, I dream about websurfing. Single? Why yes, yes I am.)
