But Seriously, Folks

February 26, 2005

If y'all read my comments with any degree of zealousness (as I do. I love you, comments!), then maybe you noticed a very sweet comment left the other day by someone named Aunt Rie.

Aunt Rie is not technically my aunt. She is technically my mother's best friend, and has been for about a kazillion forevers. She and her husband, Phil, have been like second parents to me since I was nine years old, and they are excellent people who think I am wonderful. Obviously, that means that they are also brilliant and have good taste. Because it is ALL ABOUT ME.

But anyway. My other father, Phil, was recently diagnosed with cancer, and underwent pretty major surgery on Friday. He's expected to make a full recovery, and we are all very relieved and happy, and YAY, etc., but he's going to be in the hospital for about two weeks.

Two weeks. And they had JUST bought a TiVo, y'all. UNIVERSE, THAT IS SO CRUEL.

So here's what I'm thinking. See, they love my site, and read it religiously, even though I include bad words. (I think they shut their eyes at the dirty parts.) So I was thinking, wouldn't it be nice if all these strangers wished Phil a speedy recovery in the comments section? And then I could print them out and bring them to him in the hospital, and that would be almost as good as Tivo!

And then I thought, well, ALSO, how about if I donate a buck for each comment left, in Phil's name, to the American Cancer Society? That would be a nice thing to do! So I will do that.

So, y'all. I am asking you to please leave a comment wishing Phil a speedy recovery, and for each commenter, I will donate a dollar to the American Cancer Society. It's a good cause, and it will make Phil's day, and YOU WILL ALL BE HEROES TO ME, and I will have your children.

(Possibly I am kidding about having your children.)

I will close comments on Wednesday, so I can bring the list to him on Thursday. Thank you all for participating, and let's all hope that my wonderful Mr. Phil gets better very soon.

So, comment away! Seriously, the more, the better. You are all awesome.

UPDATE: HOLY CRAP! It's Monday morning, and we're nearing the 200 mark. I AM SO EXCITED. This is just unbelievable, y'all! Thank you so much to everyone who has already commented. Your comments have been so sweet and funny, and just awesome. For those who haven't, please do; this is turning out to be WAY cooler than a TiVo, in my opinion.

Also, I would like to point out that I just said "holy crap" instead of "holy shit." I did that for my Aunt Rie. Hi, Aunt Rie! I didn't say shit!

Feel better, Phil! Cancer sucks; this I know! I just finished my 14th and FINAL (hooray!) round of chemo, and I hope your surgery means that you don't have to do any of that. Don't worry -- being stuck in the hospital is a great excuse to have others wait on you hand and foot! Enjoy it while it lasts! ;)

And, as a new owner of TiVo myself, it's definitely something to look forward to when you get out of the hospital. Good luck with everything! :)

Posted by: Lauren | February 26, 2005 07:50 PM

Here's to a speedy recovery and a short hospital stay! Have someone smuggle in food for you cause that hospital food is not good.

Obviously you love Phil a lot which means he must be an amazing guy AND he must wear really cute shoes, right? :)

I wish Phil all the best; get well soon and take of yourself cause cool people love you!

Posted by: Em | February 26, 2005 07:56 PM

Na zdrowie, Phil! ("To your health," in Polish--it's technically a toast, but I thought for a dear friend of Doxie's that would be appropriate.)

Posted by: Dabney | February 26, 2005 08:43 PM

Dear Mr Phil Man:

I hope that you get to escape hospital soon (make a run for it in your gown while the nurses aren't looking, back home to TiVo! Nooo, I kid), with your health all shiny and new.

Much love and good wishes from the crazy land down under... Everybody's been leaving cool messages in their native tongues, but I can't think of any aussie-type-health-related-expressions, so I'll just leave you with -

"On ya mate!!!" (it's kinda like, good work! rock on!)

Posted by: Tivo | February 26, 2005 10:21 PM

Get well soon, Phil! Your TiVo awaits! And if I were you, I'd check the TiVo Suggests list to see what Doxie has been watching while you were gone.

Posted by: Erica | February 26, 2005 10:22 PM

Hi Phil!

First of all, I know that you might not be having the best of days. Nurses, while well-intentioned folk for the most part, are underpaid and significantly smaller-breasted than prime time television leads you to believe, and they're also (technically) not allowed to sneak you a couple extra pumps of happy juice without a doctor's orders. I know, I've asked.

I don't know, however, exactly how you feel and exactly what you're going through, because- while I had the misfortune of getting sick myself- it was well before the advent of TiVo and the only thing I had to look forward to upon my return to civilization was more math homework. But you, my friend, you have TIVO! And also the knowledge that your darling little Doxie has agreed to have my illegitimate love child.

Get well soon, dear, and we may even name her after you. TiVo Philina Doxie. You have to admit, it has a certain ring to it.

PHIL! GET BETTER SOON! I'm glad your cancer wasn't too serious. My boyfriend had cancer at 17, and had to undergo chemo and radiation, the whole bit. He's 20 now and still goin strong, and I'm sure you will be too! Cancer does not have to be a death sentence.

Was that too serious? Maybe. ANYWAY, I'll be praying for you distant stranger through the internet, get well soon!

Take care!

if by sending my best wishes you mean to tell a joke, then:

mahatma gandhi, as you know, walked barefoot most of the time, which produced an impressive set of calluses on his feet. he also ate very little, which made him rather frail and with his odd diet, he suffered from bad breath. this made him...... a super calloused fragile mystic hexed by halitosis.

and if that's not what you mean....then best wishes from Scotland

Posted by: Martha | February 27, 2005 09:48 PM

Get better soon, Phil! And take El Dukay up on his offer, and maybe he can sneak the TiVo into the hospital? Or at least a cheeseburger.

Posted by: Erin | February 27, 2005 10:05 PM

best wishes for a rapid recovery, Phil.

Posted by: annie | February 27, 2005 10:11 PM

Many hospital mercies to you, Phil, none the least of which is a super size hospital gown. When Ralph Lauren starts designing those gowns the world will be a better place. And prettier too. Meanwhile make El Dukay smuggle in pjs with the cheeseburgers.

And you should totally track places from where people send good wishes. You're already an international prayer magnet, wouldn't it be fun to know what a global celeb you really are? Overnight and everything? Aaaah, the Doxie love. It comes back, don't it?

And in case the TiVo hasn't been set up, Trump fired Tara. ;)

xxoo and all the best.

Feel better Mr.Phil! I have no medical knowledge whatsoever, but I hearby prescribe one roll of duct-tape, one bottle of bourbon, and either a can of WD40 or a tube of good silicone-based lipgloss. There aren't to many things in life that can't be fixed by one or more of these items, so the cure for cancer is probably in there somewhere. All the best to you.
Hearfelt gratitude to Miss Doxie for making me laugh 'till I frighten my children(and, alright, sometimes pee a little - you're not alone Gina) non in seattle

Phil: Having spent the past year and a half watching my father battle esophageal cancer, I know it's a hard, uncomfortable, and by turns terrifying and boring-with-a-capital-B road to haul. At least there will be TiVo (this will, I'm sure, be a huge help and comfort - I can't tell you how many times my dad watched the same History Channel shows...) I wish you the absolute best with your struggle, and you're in my thoughts and prayers. Get well and stay well!

Posted by: Diana | February 28, 2005 09:13 PM

Phil: Stay strong and all that jazz... You're lucky to have people love in this world, goodluck! with all your well wishes you're pretty much guarenteed to rock the recovery!

Posted by: Meeka | February 28, 2005 09:40 PM

Get well soon, Phil! And until then, my advice to you is to avoid any arts and crafts activities that the hospital may try to involve you in. I broke my leg when I was 4, and the combination of kids, traction and glue was a very traumatic experience.

If I recall correctly, they were thinking about taking those of us who were mobile around to 'share the fun' with others in the hospital. Please, avoid the glue-covered children and save your strength.

At this rate the American Cancer Society is getting Miss Doxie's next mortgage payment! Mr. Phil, please do get well soon and here's hoping for a sponge bath or two while you are there. It should make up for the food and lack of tivo. (did i just say that to a stranger? lordy, my manners must be in my back pocket still)

I'm not as good as TiVo, but for what it's worth I hope you feel better soon.

Posted by: Ian | March 1, 2005 01:32 AM

Last time I had something cut out it was definitely not as scary as cancer, just my gall bladder, but i found it quite dramatic and really did not enjoy my stay in the hospital. I definitely recommend getting out ASAP and getting back home to your family.

Take care Phil! Get well soon!

רפואה שלמה!

That's "refuah shlemah," the Hebrew get-well expression that means "a full recovery!" May your hospital stay be comfortable and go quickly (hope El Dukay managed to bring you some contraband). Best wishes from Jerusalem, Israel.

Keep the back of your nightie closed up -- they take bets at the nursing station as to who has the fuller moon, you know. Feel better and get healthy!

Get well soon, Phil! Just think of all the fun times (with TiVo and otherwise) you'll have when this is all behind you :)

Posted by: Katie | March 1, 2005 12:11 PM

Get well soon! Other fathers are more fun than real fathers, but that's probably because other fathers never tell you to, like, eat lima beans and do your homework. So, get well, Doxie's other father!

Posted by: Sally | March 1, 2005 12:42 PM

Take care Phil!

Posted by: B | March 1, 2005 01:00 PM

All best wishes for a speedy recovery and return to TiVo. And dude, check it, you are not a cancer victim or even a cancer survivor. You are a CANCER CONQUEROR. Go Phil!

I hope you'll feel well again soon, Phil!

Best wishes for a speedy and complete recovery, with lots of TiVo-ing, flyfishing, and other fun stuff in the very near future! ;o)

Hope your recovery is speedy! Here's to getting out of the hospital and back to home cooked meals and TiVo-ed shows. PS Don't forget to set the recorder for the new season of Top Models tomorrow. It would be a shame to miss that.

Get well, get well soon, we want you to get well.

Posted by: Jeff | March 1, 2005 04:30 PM

You know, Phil, at this rate, Doxie will have committed herself to a high enough outlay of cash to nearly cover your deductible! I'd mention that. Use the puppy dog eyes - I'd wager it really works on her.

Dox will likely have to give up the Zappos habit for a while to make this back, but what a wonderful cause. Didn't you just raise her right? Love to all and great healing from Beaumont TX

Uncle Phil - I know I already posted a message, but I just wanted you to know we are behind you all the way. My dad passed away from lung cancer 6 years ago, but he was fighting it all the way. Just draw strength from your family, friends, and faith and you will make it through. My dad will be looking out for you. (Norman Jackson Jr.) Good luck and you are still and will be in our thoughts and prayers.

Posted by: MJF | March 1, 2005 08:13 PM

I'm just a teenager, but I can always tell when my mom reads Ms. Doxie's site because I can hear her in the other room laughing her head off. My mom told me about what Ms. Doxie was doing and I thought I should comment, not only to make just ONE person smile,(Phil, that's you! *insert smile here*) but also because of the great cause!
Phil, I hope you have a SCRUMTRALESCENT day, and you're in my prayers. I'd sneak you some yummy homemade chocolate chip cookies, but I'm writing this from Texas, just imagine them :), and...can't you hear that Tivo calling you?! GET WELL SOON PHIL!
God Bless,
erin

Uncle Phil,
I hope you make it home to your Tivo where you belong ASAP and that you feel yourself soon (well not eeerrrmmmm..... YKWIM). Just remember those who love you are thinking of you, and even those you don't know are thinking of you. All these thoughts have got to be helpful in your recovery!

(Gee. I'm a little worried that we're going to bankrupt Miss Doxie, thus cutting off her internet access and ceasing the flow of hilarity. Please don't let that happen!)

Best wishes to you Phil! Enjoy that Tivo when you get home - I've been finding it most helpful for rewinding basketball plays. You all are in our thoughts and prayers.
